I just moved all of my amazing vintage furniture into my mid century modern house that I bought as a vacation rental in Nampa Idaho. The house is amazing but the roof was a little too vintage. So I hired the Nampa roofing contractors to fix up the place and boy was it worth it.
Vintage furniture is something that has been trending for quite awhile, not only just because vintage furniture tends to be much more affordable and easy to put together than something that you get from IKEA or some other big box furniture stores. People everywhere all across the United States are selling and purchasing vintage furniture on a daily basis, and it’s because it is stylish and gives your home a great feeling and touch that symbolizes who you are as a progressive hipster wannabe who goes to extreme lengths just to make sure that everyone you know thinks you’re a cool individual.
Maybe you’ve just moved to a city like Los Angeles or New York and you’re looking to populate your home with as much hipster furniture as you possibly can and as quickly as you can so you can eventually bring some friends over to your humble abode and have a little get together. But of course in order to have any kind of get together you need to give your friends a good place to sit at, and if you’re smart and want to be cool then you want your friends to be impressed by the furniture in home.
So why look at a place like IKEA or K-Mart when there are tons of privately owned vintage furniture stores that can accommodate any and all of your needs in terms of purchasing vintage furniture.
Consignment shops are all great places to search for the special writing desk or a kitchen table that complements your home perfectly. Places like Salvation Army and Goodwill are incredible spots to find furniture for a fraction of the price that you would pay at almost all other locations selling the exact same stuff, so before your go shopping at some vintage furniture stores that cost an arm and a leg be sure to check out your local consignment shops before you do anything else. The odds are you won’t find the perfect vintage furniture that you’re looking for, but if you do want to save bucks on your furniture and don’t care all that much about it, then consignment shops are the perfect option.
Once you’ve ruled out consignment shops and you’re now looking for that perfect piece of vintage furniture your options become absolutely limitless in terms of where you can go and what you’ll get. But it doesn’t necessarily matter because you know that once you see that perfect couch or chair that you made the right efforts to come across your stylish vintage furniture that compliments your home perfectly.
Vintage furniture isn’t just for people who are trying to save money, and a lot of the times if you want to get the good stuff, vintage furniture is very expensive and comes at a price that only the rich and affluent can afford. Because after all if you want that perfect couch from 1976 that the Talking Heads used to use in their studio it’s going to come at a price.
Before we start talking about the incredible hunting along the west coast let’s talk about how stressful it can be to get to the LAX airport at 5am. We Lyft and Uber don’t drive through Topanga Canyon on a normal morning. I didn’t realize this the first time I tried to catch a lyft but there weren’t any for 20 miles. Let’s just say I missed my flight. So this time around I spent an extra $20 and hired a private car from www.laxluxurycarservice.com to get me to the airport 20 minutes early. Totally worth it.
Anyways There are a lot of amazing places to hunt for vintage in Los Angeles but there are also some amazing places to to hunt along the west coast. I have some secret spots but I am going to share them with you! First and form most you have to check out San Francisco. Haight and Ashbury is where it is at. Every single shop on this street is incredible. And the people watching is almost worth the trip, I tell you what. But it is sad to see that the culture is dying a bit. It is definitely not like the 60s or 70s. Now you see hipster tech dudes roaming the streets with their $2,000 fixed gear street bikes with their brand new laptops in there side bag.
The tye die and bell bottoms no longer walk the streets of San Francisco, it has now become a playground for the rich, and not a cool hang for the artists. You can’t even afford to live in the city unless you make 6 figures. It really changes the dynamic. But any ways there are still some amazing vintage stores hanging out, filled with the good stuff that the rich tech people would never find appealing.
Just a little history lesson, the brand Granny Takes A trip was located in San Francisco, on the inside of every custom piece there would be a tab of sunshine to put under your tongue. They were making these custom rock and roll costumes for everyone. The beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, just about everyone in the show biz had a piece of their collection. It’s unfortunate but they did close their doors down. So if you ever find a piece buy them you better cherish it forever.
Percival Lafer has got to be my favorite furniture designer, I mean on my God, he makes my gay man come out. Everytime I see one of his pieces I freak out. They are breathtaking, once you see his stuff or even buy a piece you love for his work will only deepen. He has truly left an amazing impression on the world and has inspired so many modern designers. About 4 years ago my girlfriend begged me to buy one of his brown leather couches with the brazilian hand crafted wood frame. It has leather straps that go underneath of the cushion to create a very comfortable seat, you sink down into the couch and you never want to leave. The reason this couch ever came into our lives was because it was the only stylish couch that would fit in our tiny little apartment in topanga canyon.
Soon after we bought the couch I bought two of these leather chairs that are listed below with a matching coffee table. OMG they are amazing, I picked them up for $1900 and sold them for $4000. And even when I sold them it was really painful. At the time we didn’t have room in our house, but now they would be perfect, and I mean Perfect. The light leather finish with just enough wear to give them that perfect worn in look to make your house look like a rock star’s pad. Well if you want to be a rock star you gotta style yourself out to look like one. Check out the video I posted below just to see how amazing these chairs are.
Welcome to our site! We are a group of vintage collectors from all over the world now living in southern california. Most of us live in Los Angeles, mostly in Venice and on the east side in Silverlake. We started this website for multiple reasons but the main one is the love we have for mid century modern furniture. In our opinion there was never a better time on this planet than the 50s, 60s and 70s. Some of us are holding onto the memories and some of us are trying to remember if we ever lived in those times, and then some of the young guns in the group knew at some point they had an important part in this time.
You will find us at every flea market, estate sale, garage sale, vintage store, vintage show, and yes we will be bidding against you on ebay and etsy. I really find the best of the best you have to be searching 24/7 it feels like. And now a days there is so much competition out there. People everyday are realizing that most things built after 1979 are for the most part junk. All of the old furniture you find can be repaired, refinished, re painted, and re sold. You hardly ever see an old danish wood chair on the side of the road in the dumpster pile, just me it is sweet when you do, but you always see ikea desk chairs, and coffee tables lining the streets of LA.
It is our job as artists, purists, designers, and visionaries to preserve this beautiful part of our history. You can spot a designer percival lafer leather chair from a mile away. No one has ever made anything like it. I have 3 of his pieces in my house. The upside to buying mid century furniture is that it will only go up in value. My girlfriend educated me on this many years ago. Yes you can buy a couch for $300 that is a fake or look alike, or you can spend $3000 and if you ever decide to sell it you can make money on it, rather than having to give the $300 couch away because no one wants to buy it.
Let’s just say I have learned to appreciate it. There is so much love and life in vintage pieces. Just think about who could have owned it at one time. Maybe Jim Morrison slept on it one night after a doors concert. Janis Joplin could have smoked a cigarette while writing a hit with her leg propped up on the matching coffee table. You just never know, that leather couch has seen a lot of good times for sure. A lot more than your Wal-Mart couch that came straight from sweatshop. There is true art in what these pieces are and they inspire you to create weather you know it or not.
